The Merdeka Square in Colonial District of Kuala Lumpur

The small Colonial District is centered on the beautifully tended Merdeka Square (which is located on Jl Raja Laut). Malaysian Independence (merdeka meaning freedom) was proclaimed here on August 31, 1957. A hundred metres south, on Jl Hishamuddin, lies probably the city's most famous building: the 1911 old railroad station, impressive by its spires, minarets, domes and arches.
